What changes the value of Marriott points

Cash rate versus points price

CPP rises when cash prices spike or when points prices lag behind demand. It falls when cash rates are low or when award pricing climbs.

Fifth night free effect

On some award stays, booking five consecutive nights entirely on points may price the fifth night at zero points. That can materially increase your value per point on longer stays.

Peak dates and dynamic pricing

Marriott pricing can move quickly. Event weekends, holidays, and high-occupancy dates can swing either cash or points prices (or both).

Taxes and resort fees

Compare like-for-like totals. If your cash price includes taxes and mandatory fees, use that same all-in total when calculating CPP.

Alternative redemptions

Airline transfers and experiences can sometimes beat hotel redemptions, but results vary. For most travelers, hotel bookings are the most consistent way to compare cash vs points.

How to use the calculator

Use totals for the same stay so the comparison is apples-to-apples.

1) Enter the cash total and points total

Use the full cash amount for the stay (ideally including unavoidable taxes/fees) and the points required for the same room and dates.

2) Review the cents-per-point result

The calculator shows your CPP and compares it against the current median valuation band. Above the band, points tend to be a better deal.

3) Decide points vs cash using the verdict

If you are in the neutral zone, consider flexibility (refundable cash rates), upcoming redemptions, and whether the fifth night free applies.

If the result looks too low

Double-check that your cash total includes the same taxes/fees you will actually pay, confirm the points price is for the same room type, and watch for nightly rate variance across multi-night stays.

Examples

A few realistic scenarios to sanity-check the calculator output.

City weekend (2 nights)

When cash runs higher for the same points price, CPP can land in the excellent range.

Cash total: $480
Points total: 48,000 pts
Value per point: 1.00 cpp
Verdict: Use points (excellent value).

Resort week (5 nights, fifth night free effect)

When cash and points are in line with the median, the result often sits in the neutral band.

Cash total: $1,520
Points total: 200,000 pts
Value per point: 0.76 cpp
Verdict: Usually neutral (check fees/taxes).

Low cash rate (promo or off-peak)

When cash is low relative to the points price, paying cash is usually better.

Cash total: $320
Points total: 50,000 pts
Value per point: 0.64 cpp
Verdict: Use cash.

Methodology and assumptions

We treat the page Median CPP as the baseline value per point. It is computed as the median of the selected third-party valuations (shown in the valuation sources list inside the calculator).

We show a practical low/high range using the calculator neutral band (currently 0.68-0.84 cents/pt). Real-world value varies by seasonality, cash-rate spikes, taxes/fees included in the cash total, and quirks like the fifth night free.
